FreeLoader
(2,587,000 bytes)
|
FreeLoader is a neat new Internet plug-in that allows you to
"subscribe" to Web pages and have any changed pages automatically
download to your hard disk in the background while you're browsing on-line
- or to do the same thing overnight, while you're asleep. Unusually,
FreeLoader also incorporates a "Web News Station" service as
well, advising you every day of recommended new sites on the Net, cool downloads
and the latest Net buzz. Installation of the software (which only runs on
Windows 3.x and Windows 95 at present) is fully automatic and
it's remarkably simple to learn. At present, FreeLoader only have US East
and West Coast download sites and it's popular - so you may have to wait
awhile to download. Both the software and the news service are completely
free. A new version 2.0 is now in beta. Our Top Pick Of The Week.

Jot-It! For
Windows (609,880 bytes)
|
Have you ever wished you could slap a post-it note on a Web page, a news
service, an icon, a dialogue or anything else on your computer screen? If
the answer is "Yes", Evergreen Software's Jot-It! 2.1 for Windows 3.x/95
is the answer. This zippy piece of software allows you to attach post-it
notes to anything on your computer (including Web pages); change
the note's colour, font, border or title with a few mouse-clicks; and add
or delete them at will. You can even attach sound files to your notes
if you want to hit the heights of complete geekness. The full version costs
$29.95, but a download demo is free. (Note: Evergreen's Canadian
download site is outsourced, and this offers several other interesting
products as well!).

The iD Software
Archives (Varies)
|
Something a little different this week - a trip into the iD Software games
archives, where you can download the latest shareware version of
Quake, along with versions of Doom, Doom 2, Hexen and
Heretic. Some of the downloads are small, some immense - and many
are also available through Jumbo, Shareware.COM or Happy Puppy if you have
any difficulties with the iD Software site. A new Macintosh version of
Hexen is available in the archives, and there are many Unix
downloads as well - but the majority are for Windows 3.x/95/NT.
